How to remove and replace the turbo on a DCi 136

Hi,

I've recently had the whail of death for my turbo. Mine is a 2005 DCi 136 SVE.

Instead of stumping up a small fortune to Nissan, I decided to replace it myself.

Here is how I did it.....

I hope this helps others in the same position.

Disclaimer: By making this guide, by no means do I state this is either the best way, or the correct way.
This is how I managed to change mine, and figured out what I believe to be the easiest way to change it. I accept no liability if you attempt to change your turbo yourself, and things go wrong. If you are not confident underneath a bonnet, this is likely not a DIY job. As an estimate, this will take 5 hours to remove, and 5 hours to refit.

Thanks bugone for taking the time to help out other members on the forum I'm sure the DCi members will be glad to know that they can tackle the job themselves and save some money too.

thanks for that bugone, a comprehensive and well put together set of instructions and advice.
if my turbo went i would not hesitate to follow those instructions and replace it myself.

Good guide, well done, should help alot of us decide whether or not to tackle this ourselves, also an indication of likely time/cost if done by a Garage.

Thanks for the post Bugone.
I also have the whistle of death, and from your post and the price quoted by Nissan, I have decided to replace the turbo myself.
I was quoted ÂŁ1250 by Nissan to replace the turbo (and that is a trade price as I work for them part time)
I have recieved my turbo back from Turbo Technics today at a cost of ÂŁ475+vat (ÂŁ570 inc vat) and aim to fit it tomorrow. I was lucky that I was able to get a worn out turbo from the parts dept, sent that away to be refurbished. so will be tackeling the complete job tomorrow.
I will let you know how I get on.

Hi all again
Turbo swap completed without to much trouble, first problem I had was that on removal I had a stud snap on me, The one at the rear of the turbo that connects it to the exhaust manifold. It was just a job of drilling out and re-threading it mu only other problem was reconnecting the oil feed pipe to the cylinder block, I managed to do this by only fitting the exhaust manifold and turbo (along with the oil feed pipe)to the engine, then connect the oil feed pipe to the block and tighten to correct torque. Then fit the cat and rest of exhaust. It is a tight fit to get the torque wrench onto the three nuts that hold the cat and turbo together, but a bit of patients and I managed it.
All in all the complete job including drilling out the broken stud took me about 6 hours.
One quick tip though is to check the oil flow to your turbo, you dont want to be completing that job again just because you overlooked the oil flow.
