Now my car is over 3 years old, I am tempted to change my own oil. something that I have done for more years than I care to mention. However, in recent years I have only had to deal with canister type filters, but I do remember the old paper filters (A30 / Anglia / Mini / Marina) which shows my age. AND they were always a pig to ensure that the container can sealed correctly. Is this a problem with the T31 diesel?

Does the oil pressure pump up quickly, always a heart stopping moment when you crank up the engine waiting for the oil light to go out.

Yes - take it to a National Auto Centre - last time I priced it, getting them to change was cheaper than buying just the oil yourself...

http://www.national.co.uk/oil-vehicle-search.aspx

Been on the site just now - they are offering an oil and filter change (if I enter the Reg of our T31) all in inc. VAT at £55.70 for the Castrol Edge fully synthetic 5W30...

Hello chrisuk,

I think Aitch has a point here, - and I do applaud Aitch for looking up the costs, etc. Unless you have all the facilities and the time to carry out this oil change, this does seem an easier alternative. I wonder what your local Nissan Dealer would charge?

I recently serviced my wife's old Yaris, had to buy a couple of tools specifically for the service and no doubt spent more than having the job done for me.

Like you, I have serviced some BMC cars in the distant past and I well remember the paper oil filter cartridges, lining up all the components before re-assembly and then checking the car for leaks in the following week. If, like me, you no longer fit comfortably under a car I would take Aitch's option.

Best wishes, John

Heh - gets better - just phoned local branch - they are now quoting £45 all in for the Castrol Edge 5W30 with filter (special 'Winter Offer') - cheapest I can find the oil alone is around £70: Asda's are selling 4L for £35. T31 M9R will need 7.5L with a filter change. WHY WOULD YOU EVER DIY?!

Good point, why get your hands dirty. Is Castrol Edge fully synthetic 5W30 still the oil to go for? When I bought the car I bought a litre for tops ups, I have never had to us it.

8 Litres of decent 5W30 for £14?

...do you own a refinery?

Us T31 diesel owners with DPFs need a high-quality *low-ash* lubricant...
