Having recently removed the rear silencer or back box from my 2.0 Petrol sport X-T, it sounds rather nice and doesnt have that huge lump of steel hanging down to hit every lump or bump (or maybe protect the underside?). I have seen in the past i think, the replacement of this box by a cherry bomb type silencer.

My questions are as follows....

Is the rear box necessary for correct fuelling/running? It seems that it is just a passive silencer box.
Is the rear box necessary to conform to emissions testing?
Is it an MOT fail if it has been removed?
Can I just extend the tail pipe around and to the rear of the vehicle?

If I have to have a silencer, what type do people recommend - I like the idea of a silencer "in line", rather than the "across car" standard style.
