Hard to start xtrail stalls below 1000 revs but when cam sensor is removed it starts and idles smoothly but when reconnected the engine stalls, fault code is for crank position sensor. Just bought this car knowing the fault, just wondering if the camshaft end that gives the signal to the sensor is held by a pin that is prone to snap/shear? Any help appreciated thanks.

Please advise fault codes.

Cam sensor takes signal from vacuum pump drive sprocket which is bolted to end of camshaft with quite a sturdy slotted fixing.

Timing chain stretch can cause correlation issues between crank and cam sensor signals.

Suction Control Valve on fuel pump is main culprit for idling issues.

There is a 2 or 3mm pin in the vacuum pump chain spoket, with that pin the spoket is positioned in correct position on to the cam shaft. It is common that the pin brakes and the spoket position is off. Camshaft sensor takes it's reading from that spoket.
