So I took my old 2004 2.2dci on its first trailer run today to have a trial run before a caravan. Electrics work but lights dim with hazards so guess a bad earth. Not really surprising as the 2 hookup point have broken doors so have been flapping in the elements for some time.

My question is can I just buy 2 new sockets, give its a scrub and replace or does it need to be rewired back to the source (assume in the boot somewhere)

You should be able to just trim the wires for the cable back a little as long as you have enough free length of cable from xtrail and get back into some shiny copper again (Tends to go black over the years) I would then solder the ends of the wire where they fit the towing socket, then when all fitted just spray a little lubricating oil on all joints or use some spray grease.Do this with the towing plug on the trailer too. Fit one of those rubber boots then over the towing socket as will protect even with the flaps missing in the future
