I'd like to remove the rear exhaust box mainly as it greatly reduces my exit angle when grass laning and as far as I can tell it has no real use except to reduce noise as emission's seem to be dealt with mid car.
A) is the an after market unit I can swap to?
B) has anyone else swapped this giant waste of space lol

I have my other 4x4's worked on by a 4x4 specialist and they have told me they will build a rear box/replacement unit as a custom which I will do if I can't find anything else.

My info from longlife was £200 for a basic rear box single exit

Custom twin rear boxes worked out around £400

For a transverse twin exit back box it was quoted around 250-300 depending on exit tips

Cheers for the info I'll have to dig around a bit more. I did see on an Aussie X-Trail site they have removed the rear box completely but couldn't find any more info plus as they have different noise and emission reg's I doubt it would pass in the uk lol

Here in South Africa we also not to phased about emission levels - anything goes :)
I would like to mod my rear box simply to give it more clearance as i take it offroad a lot and always scared I will rip the box off.
Totally removing it, might create other problems like lots of noice and loss of back pressure which could lead to poor performance - not??

I'm thinking of replacing the rear silencer with a 12" bullet type silencer creating a centre exit pipe running through the plastic rear valance. I have the intention of butchering a second hand box for the pipework and brackets and from my measurements the ground clearance will be drastically increased. The only worry I have is the noise, does anyone have experience of using this type of silencer, I am willing to remove and re-fit the standard rear box for road use, but would like the option of not bothering from time to time. Or should I double up on the silencers and continue with a side rear exit?

Hi

Have you tried Jetex they have an extensive range, are popular source for larger off roaders. http://www.jetex.co.uk/website/jetexcustomexhaustparts.php.

You can custom build a system in either stainelss or mild steel, and order direct on line. Jetex also do other stuff like intakes too. Let us know how you get on.

I have found a sports exhaust advertised on Ebay by Toyosports for £90. It is not quite as small as the NISMO which seems to be very hard to get hold of, however it is smaller than the OE. In theory you could make on up using parts from Jetex, however if you do not want to do that the sports exhaust would be a good compromise.

The OE measures 21 1/2" long by 13 1/2" wide (front to back) by 7 1/2" deep. The sports exhaust measures 21 1/2" long by 10 1/4" wide by 5 3/4" deep.

The NISMO exhaust
