Take your intake pipe off the turbo and check for end play in the shaft, should have a very small amount and spin freely. Just make sure you do it when it cold, you'll burn your fingers!

Cheers Egg.What are my options re getting it fixed without selling the house?
Depends on the age and mileage of yours, some are covered under an extended 5 Year, 92K warranty!

If not the last one I did at work on a Almera Tino ( Same Lump!) was £1500 retail!

Contact nissan with your vin. number that way there will be no mistake,,,

the xtrail is a good work horse my dci pulled like a train but the turbo was a big worry,ie over in france 1500mls with a caravan on the back ,nissan should have never allowed the problem to go on this long. have got a 2.5 xtrail 2006, runs on lpg does not pull as good as a dci but costs are much lower 24 mpg so thats 48mpg (lpg is half the cost of derv) ... regards...mark
