My 2004 diesel SVE (54k) has developed a droning noise which I am 95% certain is from front O/S wheel bearing.

I have swopped round tyres etc there is no play in the bearing with wheel off ground and 2 or 4WD dont affect it. Any body

have any ideas ? Planning on replacing bearing weekend, any thing any one know about free wheeling hubs that may be

useful.Best price on bearing I have found is £49 + VAT from a factor

any advice welcome

Since changing my tyres for Goodyear Wranglers I have had what sounds like a wooshing noise from the front end which is speed dependant.
At first I thought it was the tyres, but a dealer said it was a wheel bearing noise from the FNS, but having had it replaced (£221) the noise is still there, he has offered to do the other side for cost of parts only.

I will let you know what happens

Can you describe the noise what your getting?

Had a sniff around and best price I can find for Front wheel bearing is £47 including vat.
Might change my front two just to eliminate them as the more I read the more I suspect them.

Replacement Wheel Bearing to O/S did not cure my problem, Any one have any 4X 4 specialist outside Nissan pref in Midlands they could recomend, its going to have to go somewhere for investigation this week.

Took my xt back to dealer last week, 2 of there technicians test drove the xt and both could not identify the noise or where it was coming from.
They have advised me to 'let it develop' as it could be tyres, wheel bearing, prop shaft bearing of difs.
This all sound serious money to me.
They even turned the engine off and freewheeled to try and distinguish the noise.
If the weather stays fine for a few hours, I will get it up on the jack and spin the wheels to see if I can locate the noise.

I can only describe the noise as a whooshing/droning sound that is speed dependant and is better heard from the driver's seat, but is not easily identifiable as to pin point.

The xt has done 62k and is a Mk1 2.2 di Sept 03

Well seem to have almost 100% cure, after convincing myself it were diff or transaxle cream crakered !!!!

Car purchased with 4 Avon Ranger tyres all round (with directional fitment reqd) spare steel wheel has Dunlop SP210 Grand Trek which i am 99 % sure is from OE fitment which has no directional requirement & is also less knobly.

Spare put on O/F and noise almost gone, so I have matched this tyre with same & had them knocked on alloy rims to fronts.

Car is 90 % better & acceptable to drive, so as Mark V said tyres seem to have big contribution to these mainly road cars.

I have a steel spare with Dunlop original equipment tyre on (never been used).

I will try same experiment and let you know

Not sure I want to change the tyres again as they are only 8k old, but if I know what it is I can live with it.
