First couple of tanks of fuel I hammered along the motorway at 75-80mph - and with the cold weather the return was just 35mpg.

Anyway - over the weekend I did a couple of journeys at just 70mph - and there does seem to be a vast improvement.

What is the best you have had from a tank?

Ken,
We have a 2005 2.2 dci SVE. We get an average of 39mpg, that is mixed town & country driving with very little motorway. Its not hammered though and normally used in 2wd.

Tank = 60 litres - and the gauge is pretty accurate (in my experience).

Light foot!!!

Knowing from tests I did with my old Volvo (which was newer) that dropping from 75-80mph cruise to a 65-70mph cruise gave a marked increase in economy.

Well that would mean running the tank dry by using all 60 litres, every time I have filled up after the fuel worning light iluminates, i can only get about 50 litres in, that means there must be still 10 litres slushing around in the tank, so on average I get about 375 -400 miles per 50 litres

I've got an 57 plate 2.0D manual 173bhp X-Trail, I've got a very heavy right foot and I mainly drive my 72 mile round trip journey to work on A and B roads, 99% of the time in 4WD Auto. The trip computer states I'm averaging around 37mpg, which is not too bad considering the book states 38.2mpg combined.

We normally fill up when it gets to quarter tank. Always fill the tank to brim, then all I do is divide the quantity I put into the miles I have done since the last fill up. After converting the litres to gallons. As meerkat chappie says "simples"
