I got a genuine Nissan spare key with a brand new white chip for £19 off sbay. All i need now is to get the transponder programmed to the car.Does anyone know how to go about this and what the cost might be.The best time to make up a spare key is when the existing one is still working Kind Regards Barry

I think you need to get the key cut, and then go to a nissan dealer. They will most likely try to charge you for an hours service, though you can try to negotiate it down to a half hour or so. If you are in a major city such as London there might be a locksmith service which has spent the thousands of dollars or pounds to get the necessary NATS software and license from Nissan. To the best of my knowledge there is no programming the transponder chip as all it does is emit a signal when powered up by the magnet that surrounds your ignition key hole. Its your car that needs programming to accept the signal from that chip as one of the valid ones it its memory. I know some makes and models can have the keys cloned but I don't think it can be done for Xtrails.

Just to let you know i had success with Timpsons, £40 later and i had my key cloned and working.

Ive also gone in before with my own key blanks and they will cut those for me, they just cant guarantee it if something happened since they didn't supply it. They can tell you straight away with just the current key what they can do.

Im happy paying £40 for a key, even if it is a clone, instead of the £140 for a basic key from the dealers...

Well that is great if the newer cloning machines will work. When I lost a set 6 years ago, the only place I could find with such a machine tried to do it and it did not work. In addition the guy screwed up cutting the key and it would not even open the door locks using it. Did work on the glove box, but otherwise useless. Finally it was much easier for me to get another key off ebay guy I bought from, took it to a good locksmith to cut it and then negotiated a half hour labor charge at the dealer. So cost finally was $15 or so cdn for key, 5 for cutting and $50 at the dealer. So I guess that worked out to about 40 Pounds total.
