Hi,

I've swapped discs and pads a few times before on other cars so I tried to do the xtrail today.

I've a proper rewind tool for the piston but everything I read was that it was a push return on these. For all the strength I could summon I could not get the piston back far enough to get new discs and pads in. Of course the handbrake was off etc but did I miss a trick?

The t32 has electric hand brake, i believe. One way is either a scanner to put it in to service mode. If not the disconnect the connector from the caliber, take a second battery, then some wire leads and try to connect it to e-brake motor.
Watch the polarity. One way, the piston comes out, the other way , piston goes in.
Aftef that, apply few times the ebrake.
Hope you did not brake something with your method. Not that easy anymore.
