just bought 05 dci sport 4wks ago,i find when changing from 1st to 2nd it is not smooth ,took it to nissan dealer ,service manager said this is a charactoristic with x trails. does anyone else have this problem...........

when driving the car in 2wd,auto or 4wd,this makes no difference.The only way i can change gear smoothly is to let the revves drop back to idoling speed,this would indicate to me that the syncomesh may not be doing its job..........

I've just purchased a 3 year old (44000mls) and have found this, so I have (sounds daft this)developed the knack of not moving straight down from 1st to 2nd but shifting from 1st to neutral then slightly moving the gearstick to the left then into second (all in one movement) and curiously this has made a difference. Getting revs right naturally.

As I am in the oil business, I shall be looking as the gear oil situation. The books says 75W-85 API GL4 spec oil which is a bit of an oddball so I shall be changing it to a synthetic 75W-90.

As the change seems at its worst when hot this oil MAY offer a little assistance to the synchromesh. Watch this space!

I have a 55 plate DCI, Mine is also notchy from 1st to 2nd. Its just how they are I think. Certainly nothing to worry about.

yes i to have the same on my 55 plate sport,
tried several xt's and they all seemed the same

I had this problem until I changed the Manual gear box oil for Redline MT90 75W90 GL-4 and now the shift works smoothly through the syncro mesh. I can recommend this oil as it's been in my X-Trail for the last 3 Years and if you decide to change the oil you have to replace the drain plug Gaskets they should not to be reused and the Part No is:11026-4N200 two required.

Access is through front N/S wheel arch, you'll have to take the wheel off to gain good access for draining and filling. Jack up front N/S and put an axle stand under, then you'll need to remove the inner plastic cover shield to get at the filler plug and it would beneficial to get a (Draper Oil Suction Gun Hand Pump Syringe Gearbox & Diff) for refilling.
Make sure vehicle is level when you refill.

Just to add to the general body of evidence, my wife's does it too. 56-plate 2.2 diesel with 50,000 miles. Has always done it (well, since we got it at 40,000 miles anyway). Natrually, worse on cold mornings, but never what you'd call "slick"!
