The dealer is trying to 'up-sell' me a paint and fabric protection deal with the car.

The paint protection is called Dura-seal and is claimed to be a ceramic based protection that comes with a lifetime warranty. The advantages of the protection seems to be no different to that provided by regular washing and polishing using high grade products. For example, I use Maguires Gold Class on the Skyline and it is seriously good.

Do you have similar protection products in the UK and are there any forum users who could comment on whether it is worthwhile, or a money making exercise for the dealers?

I bought the treatment "Glasscoat" for mine, pre delivery & it seems fine.

The only paint protection I have seen that works is a full 'clear vinyl wrap'. I have seen it done on a Pajero when new - this machine was used as a work horse -when the owner went to trade it in, he removed the vinyl and the paint was without a scratch.

He had his done by a professional wrapping company, check your local area.

Alternately, there's the DIY route, but it's very tricky for a first timer and i wouldn't recommend it:

Thanks for your replies.

I ended up not getting the paint protection and will just keep up with the polish instead. There's a fair amount of black 'plastic' on the car which still has to be regularly looked after. I am sure the paint protection wouldn't be applied to those areas any way.

We may yet get the fabric protection but will see how things go.
