Yes I noticed both... The Viagra spam is annoying but more importantly, where has everyone gone? I came from the Pajero Club and saw a huge drop in active members as they drifted away to Facebook and of course declining numbers of Mark2 models ( the Mk3 never had the same DIY following as the Mk1 and Mk2)
I can see the T30 forums appear to be busier than the T31 but the number of posts are still very low.
There appears to be a regular small number of newbies introducing themselves and I suppose some join but do not introduce themselves and as Truckdriver has pointed out in the past some newbies appear once with a problem, never to be heard from again...

So where has everyone gone?

K

I think all forums are suffering...
The Vectra forum I've come from has dropped off recently too..
People are just less sociable these days and perversely social media is making it worse, lol
First thing I did when I decided to get an Exy was to find a forum, the wealth of knowledge and help just cant be matched with Facebook..

Btw which Paj club were you in ? I used to be on Pocuk many moons ago...

Same here... I was Kevinbuk on the POCUK for 11 years with two SWB Mk2 2.8 Pajeros and a 2.8 Challenger... great cars ;-)

I'm no facebook expert, however, I feel that the function of traditional forums has changed. Once people with problems came to ask questions or give solutions / opinions.... it was a kind of social interaction as well as a way to find out stuff.

Now people with problems turn up (generally having googled their problems) and read old threads to find solutions.

OK, so you register so you can see the pictures, but if you find your answer in a three year old post, you are pleased enough, and then you are on your way. Most people don't feed the need to acknowledge the usefulness of the forum (or thank a contributor from three years ago), but it doesn't mean the value of a forum's collected wisdom is not there.

I assume facebook is less like an archive, and more like a coffee shop (possibly a quite rowdy one). Great for social interaction, but possibly less good for research.

Either that or everyone is too exhausted to post, having over indulged in the spammers 'wares'.

All I can say is that I have used forums to mine for information, and to share knowledge about keeping costs down on repairs. I have noticed a trend of new members who post one question, and never acknowledge the help they receive. Typically they do not bother to search the forum, and seem to expect someone to help while rarely showing any gratitude. I also think that the appliance philosophy is becoming more prevalent, and that for a lot of people, a problem is a reason to get rid of the vehicle rather than to figure it out and fix it. Newer models seem to have less people interested in joining and posting, and I notice the horror some express at the idea of working on their vehicles themselves.
That said the moderators here are negligent in allowing new members to immediately be able to post links. It is sad that the odd new member will need to be patient and wait a few days to be able to post links, but it is the only way to discourage bots that seek to take advantage of the existing set up to place c**P ad after ad. This affected Nissan Forums a couple of years ago and the solution was to change the posting permission for new members. I suggest you do it here because these parasitic ads will kill the host forum in short order unless something is done.

Span will happen on even the best run forum, although I am not denying that it can be made more difficult by imposing limits on the permissions that new members have.

The most important thing with spam once you have it, is to remove it.

Having 10 pages of 'active posts' containing 99% spam does not lend itself to easy navigation!

It may be unfair to say there is negligence.
Reasons for undeleted spam cluttering up the place may vairy from mods being unavailable (family crisis / onerous work commitments) to the site being hacked and permissions being changed.

Hopefully it will get resolved very shortly

Hi everyone - the moderators are usually very good and I think the lack of numbers is maybe down to school holidays, in some way (in Scotland, they're a couple of weeks away but I'm trying to clear everything up ready for a short trip with the family)

Obviously, like a lot of other forums, we have spurts and I also think, we've just hit a slow spot and I'm sure it'll pick up soon enough

As for me, personally, I've got 2 trips booked in for October so I'm only going to be able to check in for a few days but I do try and check what's happening whenever I get wi-fi ;-)

I need to service my Exy next month so I'll let you know how I get on with my Ez Drain Valve

Cheers

Bloggsy

There are still a fair few of the longer serving members on here (even those that no longer own an xtrail  ).

In a number of cases topics are posted that have been dealt with previously in great detail and are easily found on the search function, but some folks dont want to use the search function and post anyway. This can cause some members to either ignore the post or give the link to the topics. Then as said the op disappears.

Personally, i will continue to be an avid member of the xtrail forum as I am on the mini and mg forums. I find them good sources of information and mostly good humoured.

Keep up the good work "mods" it can be a thankless task sometimes.

Best regards
Milton
