Hi,

I have just installed and fitted a towbar and 7 pin electrics myself (my wife said next time, we're paying someone to do it) and it took a little while to remove all the trim and connect everything up. I fitted a Witter towbar and dedicated electrics all from PF jones. I now have an issue running the power feed through the bulkhead to connect to the battery.

I have located the grommet behind the glovebox, but do not fancy removing all the tape to feed the wire through, or going though the grommet itself. Previous posts suggested that I could run the wire to the fuse box on the drivers side? Or hard wire it to another permanent feed with in the car? I am only intending on towing a trailer.

So how would I connect it the fuse box? And what is the battery feed actually for? Surely the electrics just run off the existing circuits?

Apologies for all the questions, although my DIY skills are decent, my car knowledge is limited (this is the first big DIY car job I have done)

If you are only towing a trailer and just fitting a single (7 pin) socket then you do not need a permanent live feed.

They are usually used for charging circuits when the towed unit has an auxilary battery. Then you would be fitting twin electrics (12N and 12S sockets or a single 13 pin nowadays)

there is a live on that multi plug in the rear,

think its a red , but just check first,

Its the WHITE wire, not red, ( this is sidelights ) on the existing wire plug in the boot,

the white wire on the towing plug / socket behind the nearside lighting
is permanent 12 volt,

this is on the socket he has picked up the indicators,
stop, fog, side and reversing lights,
so you will find the white is not connected, and this is the one he needs to use,

switchable via ignition is taken from the aux socket,

so you want a permanent 12 volts, NOT an ignition feed,
then connect to the white wire, but this is only low current ( could be a 10 amp fuse )

but 12v is not needed if you are only pulling a trailer,

If your using a relay driver box for the trailer lights then the live feed will be needed to run that.

Some folks just splice straight into the rear lights and copy the wiring over, trouble is if you have lamp out warning indicator on the dash then just splicing into the rear lights will mess the warning system up, so you have to install a driver/controller box which just uses the standard rear lights as signals to the driver/controller box which then switches corresponding trailer light on using the new live feed.

Does that make sence ?

a new supply is needed to operate the relay box, 20 amp is recommended, boot feed is only 10 amp,



on canbus systems, but the xtrail is OK, but if the trailer blows a sidelight fuse,
this fuse is located under the bonnet and is hard to get to if its dark and raining,
thats why a relay is recommended,

needed cables for rear mains invertor, 2 way radio power, tracker feed and roof beacons,

so the big grommet not used but extra hole made using plumbing overflow connector,
