Thanks Avocet - that is really helpful!
The only thing I need to find out is the Ball Weight for my XTrail?
I will get on my hands and knees and see if there is anything stamped on the tow bar?

Hi Vinny. On my old 04 2.2dci the towball weight was 100kg. There should be plate somewhere on the towball giving the weight.

Cheers. Martyn.

I have also seen some members say that they go for around 75 Kg or so - so that is where I aim to be.

For my 1400 Kg van (MPTLM)
4 % is 56 Kg
5 % is 70 Kg
6 % is 84 Kg
7 % is 98 Kg.

Thanks for the heads up Martyn.

I remember reading in a caravan magazine that 7% is the ideal ratio.

If it's not too rusty, the tow bar should be type approved, so there will be an approval number (lower case letter "e" in a rectangle, followed by some numbers and asterisks. Somewhere near there (if it is still legible) there should be a letter "S" and a number. THIS is the maximum permitted trailer nose weight for the TOWBAR. (which should be at least as much as the max permitted trailer nose weight for the car too, if the right towbar has been fitted)!

Failing that, the handbook, or EU Certificate of Conformity if you can get one for your car.

Thanks again for the replies!
I have had a new tow ball bolted on to the bracket fitted 12 years ago - to make it ALKO compatible!
I have not found any writing on the old ball or bracket - so will assume it should be 100kg, but will stay around 80 to 90 to give a little safety margin?

I have had my 2005 2.2DCi SVE on a weighbridge - to try to establish a Kerb Weight.
It had a full tank of diesel and me (about 90 Kg) and weighed 1740 kg.

I hope this is of use to other members.

Thanks Vinny, that's useful but surprisingly heavy? I'd have thought closer to the 1600kg mark?
