My car is fitted with the Clarion head unit, separate screen and Bose amp under front seat with Bose speakers and sub.
The head unit has developed a fault, showing an error of "HDD read error". Nissan say its non repairable with a new unit quoted at £6500+vat!
I would like to change the unit for a double DIN, all in one sat nav, radio etc. I realise I will lose the use of the nissan screen.

Is there the hardware to do this? Car audio specialists I have contacted say that an aftermarket head unit will not connect to the Bose amp because they already have inbuilt amp. Various forums say it can be done. Will a line output convertor be able to do this? And are there any connectors to enable use of the system to operate the steering wheel controls?

Surely someone has fitted a new aftermarket radio to their Tekna?

Never again would I have a car with a Bose system....

Well I'm overwhelmed with the responses.....

Having spoken with Clarion it seems the answer is no, you can't fit an aftermarket head unit because of the information sent to the unit regarding service, can bus info etc. Strange as I pulled it out to look at and the car runs fine without it.

I would open it up and see if the hard drive is plugged in,

then would try an old drive in it to see if it works,

Sorry Biggly, but I've no knowledge of your system!

Technology has moved on since your Exy was produced so there's no need for having a separate amp and screen to your unit. Some of our other members have changed their head unit for a one-stop shop (Sat Nav, hands free dialling, reversing camera system, etc.) and changed the surplus screen for other things like a charging station, or a shelf.

Just think of how much lighter your car will be with all the extra equipment removed!

Hope you get it sorted, soon!

Cheers

I've just changed mine for a Pioneer double din head unit. I didn't have the Bose setup so it was easier to just change the door speakers for JBL's. The original sat nav screen is currently dead but I'm looking at replacing it with a 7" tablet to run google maps which I find a lot more accurate than most off the shelf sat nav's.

Sounds good mate - how about a 'How To' with some photo's for other users, please? ;-)

I'm getting tired of my dated c**P nav which has let me down a few times, so I may change my system once the wife and kids stop their constant withdrawals!

Cheers

Google maps is great!
Obviously you need a data connection really though.
I use it for navigation on an android head unit, picks up the data connection from my phone

Yes, once it's fitted it can pick up my wifi in the driveway and plan routes or download sections of maps there. Failing that it could tether to my phone. I could use a gps only satnav but I like Google maps.
