Hi All,

This should be a simple process but its got me scratching my head. After draining old coolant from the car and flushing with clean water, I appear to only be able replenish with only 5 litres of coolant. And even that is showing slightly over filled on the expansion bottle...should be 8.9 litres, right? Drove the car around to see if it would settle but it is still the same.

What am I doing wrong? Do i need to bleed air? How?

Just checking - did you drain from the radiator and the engine block? IIRC there's a drain on both.

Via the drain point on the bottom of the radiator.

Hi Jeff - the heating system also contains some coolant. You need to warm up the car and turn the heating on to open the heater matrix, and flush the fluid through a couple of times. You could also disconnect the in and out hoses to the heater, in the engine and manually flush it through.

To be honest, when I did my last coolant flush I also found there was considerably less new coolant needed than what was said in the manual!

The heater core must be flushed backwards. And yes, there is a draining plug at the engine block where you can get more coolant/water out.

in the old days, flush out and add antifreeze neat, then top up,

today its ready mixed.

old day add 4 ltrs neat and 1 ltr water, ( 3 ltrs exist ) = 50% mix

now ready mixed add 5 ltrs ready mix to 3 ltrs of water = lower about 35 ( ish ) % mix

So that fact that I managed to get 7 litres out and only put back in 5 litres is ok?

Does anyone have a manual showing how to do this?

you do not know you got 7 out, there is always some left in,

I measured the quantity that was removed using two 5 litre measuring containers . It was just shy of 7 litres.
