hello all, this is my first post, so hi!

I have just bough an 08 adventurer after much deliberation

I need a big family sized interior but with a capability to get me to my shooting grounds, nothing to strenuous but some steep short descents and ascents with heavy rutted tracks

so, I am a previous landy owner having had a 90 and heavily modified disco so I am not expecting the same level of off road ability but...

in one careful trip I have managed to partially remove the rear bumper as it grounded coming up a short steep incline and there is now a knocking noise from the front which is suspension related, yet ti discover what has gone wrong tho.

having looked under the car I am now a little worried that I should have bought a td5 or shogun. it seems rather delicate by comparison

I do love it, on road its brilliant but I'm now scared to damage it off road.

I have trawled the net for underbody protection and found none in the uk that seem to offer anything.

im after a rear skid plate and a 4-6mm Ali replacement for the front underbody ABS plate.

any suggestions?

or is it a waste if I am still going to be left with a car that may just may be too soft for what I need.

please help as I really am pulling my hair out as I'm considering selling it at a loss to then buy a poss problematic TD5!

thanks in advance

Hi there: I'm new as well, but thought I'd while away a few minutes searching for what you seek. You never know. I might just get lucky.

In fact, although I didn't find any underbody protection for your X-Trail, I did hit comedy gold: I logged on to a parts supplier whose site included a pop-up 'How Can I Help You Today?'. I requested underbody protection / skid plates for an X-Trail. Sure enough, I was asked for VIN and reg numbers to establish the correct model. Good so far. But then I was asked, "...need the technical name of this parts or the original part number".

I wrote, "Sorry, Tony, but that would be like me attending my doctor's surgery and having him ask me for the name of the disease he is supposed to diagnose! Other than calling these items 'underbody protection' I don't know what else to say! 'Skid plates' / 'Bash plates'... I have no other suggestions!"

There was a long pause and I was asked for pictures of the items. I took a deep breath and responded that I didn't have the parts in order to take pictures of them. That is why I want to buy some...

I begin to see what you have been facing! I'll keep looking (on both our behalfs) and I do hope another member has managed to source something! They are all over the sites in Australia and the US. Surely someone in the UK makes something suitable? Have you tried calling one of the noted Land Rover offroad specialists? They might fabricate something light and easy to fix?

I'll do that, Milton, thanks. The X-Trail wasn't bought for serious off road use and I have an old Defender for that. But it will traverse grass, tracks and some steep areas with occasional rocks, so some sensible protective measures are a good idea. It will spend 95% of its time on the road, so no radical mods for me.

You will never get the ground clearance on a standard xy that you get from a disco, 90, pajero etc. Howver, put a lift kit on it and some front and rear guards and you wont be far short.

Best regards

Hi Milton,
can you remember who put on some pictures of his x trail doing some really good off roading and even had to pull a disc out of trouble that the Xy managed no problem??

Surely a lift kit won't do much, if anything for ground clearance? You lift the body further off the axle and diff, but they are usually the limiting factors and, unless you fit bigger tyres, remain at the same height. Larger tyres will not necessarily provide that much additional clearance, but may well give a wider choice of all terrain tyres.

A lift allows for bigger tyres. The bigger the tyre the easier you can roll over obstructions. The a larger footprint gives more traction. It also allows better articulation. Along with the lift kit they also raise centre of gravity and therefore increase tendency to roll.

Its an xtrail not a real 4x4, no live axle. So when you raise the suspension height everything goes with it. You cant go much more than 40mm without changing other bits like caster and camber adjustment. Standard lift kit from pedders will put around 30mm on ground clearance (if i remember right)
