Hi I hope someone can help me, I have a 2002 2.2 diesel T30. The engine gave up at 180k miles. I bought a used engine, changed the chains and fitted it. It started fine, compression is good on all 4. It however sounded like a bag of nails between 11-1400 rpm. It sound like its from the top. I was sure it was the vacuum pump chain, so I replaced this. Noise still present. I plugged it in and no fault codes. I can drive it at 2-3000rpm without issue all good. But let it drop down it sounds bad. It also sometimes has erratic idle, this may well be related. I wondered if a hydraulic tappet was knackered, and at low revs the oil pressure can escape, hence the noise. Does anyone know if there is an oil pressure control valve on the engine?

I did think of this, so I isolated them one at a time but with no improvement, and I expected it to show up when I scanned it, but nothing. Only the fact that I had unplugged them. Once that was wiped, no faults for the fuel system. I am still a bit suspicious of the injectors because of the occasional rough idle.

Will it do the same thing in neutral as well as under load? Ours has a noisy vacuum pump drive chain - which is worst around the same speeds. If it does it in neutral, try putting a screwdriver on the vacuum pump and the handle of the scewdriver on your ear. Try it on various parts of the engine to see if you can isolate the source.

Hi

It could actually be the suction control valves in your fuel pump. When these go wrong on the Di they don't seem to throw fault codes up but can cause the problems your having.

Regards
Mike

Hi Mike, that is interesting, what are the normal symptoms of the suction control valve going wrong?

The only other thing that I can think of is that you may need to have your throttle position sensor re calibrated to learn the zero position. This has to be done with consult 11 software and only a good mechanic with consult software or Nissan will be able to do this. Unfortunately like the Dci you cant do the relearn procedure by using the foot pedal.

Kind Regards
Mike

On the Di there are several things the main two are erratic idling and loss of power on acceleration around the 2000 rpm mark. The SCV's on the Di normally go sometime after 90,000 miles and its a common problem with this fuel pump which is also used on the Toyota Rav 4 and suffer the same problems.

Regards
Mike

Loss of acceleration by the way normally happens from 3rd gear onwards, forgot to mention that. What happens is you seem to hit a flat spot around 2000rpm may be a bit more and then suddenly it kicks in and feels like the turbo isn't doing its job but infact is the Scv's
