Hi
I have recently changed my engine oil and filter on my manual T31. Ive been thinking about the transmission oil.
My question is, in changing the engine oil, have I also changed my gearbox oil. Are they connected in an all in one unit, or is the gearbox separate, requiring an oil change of its own.
Thanks
Colin

Engine oil and gearbox oil is different, in some older cars it was shared like the mini. These days its pretty much always separate.

Hi Colin - if you look at my thread here

viewtopic.php?f=9&t=59137

you'll see where the front transfer box oil and gearbox oil goes on our T31's.

Hope this helps.

Cheers

Thanks to Dogmatic69 and Bloggsy.

Bloggsy, excuse my lack of knowledge, but what is a transfer box and do I have one. Also what does it do.

Hi Colin - it's the front differential, and works exactly like the rear differential (except on the front axle of course!) - transferring power to the wheels but, more crucially, it allows one wheel to turn faster/slower than the other so when you go round a corner, the inside wheel can go slower than the outside wheel.

It's one of the oils that's sometimes missed when servicing a car. You don't have to do it very often, but it's always worth changing if you don't know the history of the car or it's got high mileage.

And, yes, you and I have one

Just make sure you put the right oil in

Cheers

The transfer box actually transfers the power to the rear axle via the propshaft, it is not the front differental

Oops! Sorry - it was an early start to the day and I hadn't had my coffee!

Hope I've not confused you.

Thanks Trikerman for your expertise, now I understand.

So now Bloggsy, I have two diffs and the gearbox to sort out. Ive not had the car many weeks, and dont know its history, so I need to get things put right especially as I tow with the car.
If the diffs or gearbox dont have drain plugs, I can syphon the sludge/oil out. Do you know what oil goes back in these parts.
Is it special oil, or would any good make be ok.
Thanks so much.

Codge

Hi Codge - here's a list of the oils for the T31.

I can't take the credit for this list - it was posted by another member, in another thread, but I thought it'd come in handy one day!

The diffs and gearbox should have drain plugs, just make sure you remove the fill plug first, as if the fill plug doesn't come off, you don't want an empty oil reservoir!

You'll need a 'square' key but I went to Amazon and got a set which helped with with the diffs, gearbox and engine oil.

Cheers
