Central locking problems

Hi,

I have bought a 57 plate Mk2 2.0 diesel. The central locking has been working great up until a few days ago. In work yesterday and it wouldn't lock on the key fob or the button on the door handle so I used the key.

After work tried to unlock the car with the keyfob and again it wouldn't work. I used the key in the door and this set the alarms off. Key in the ignition and this stopped the alarm.

Since then the car is sounding some sort of warning beep when I press the lock button on the key fob. If I keep pressing and keep pressing some times (very occasionally) the car then locks. If his happens the car will unlock as soon as I press the unlock button. If I lock with the key the unlock button will not work.

I have an air bag warning light on the dash (repair in progress) and whenever the fault with the central locking is happening there is a light on the dash that consists of a car outline with a key in it.

Question is, any ideas on where to start?

Thanks in advance
Tom

Update:

In work this morning and the buttons still doesn't work. Used the key and only the drivers door will locked

Not yet as I was unsure of what batteries are required. I've literally come here as first port of call. I shall try that tonight.

Is it useful info that both key fobs yield the same fault?

Just changed the batteries in the fob, still no luck.

I've also checked the sensor that tells the bonnet is down, it was sticking (open circuit when the bonnet is open, should be closed circuit) but is fully working now.

Any ideas where I should look next?

I'm booked in for a diagnostics Wednesday, for the air bag fault. Will the central locking fault show up on the snap-on diagnostic machine?

Just tried the key fob reset process.

Turing the ignition on and off does not result in the hazards flashing. Assuming this terminology is correct, my ignition barrel can be moved into the following positions.

Insert key - OFF and locked - ACC - IGN - Starter motor

Variations I have tried are:

- Moving from Accessories to Ignition on x6 in 10 sec
- Moving from off to Ignition on x6 in 10 sec
- Moving Ignition on to removing key x6 in 10 sec

None of these make the hazards flash. Maybe it is different on the T31, I don't know it just seems to have no effect.

Car still starts, with the keys in my pocket, Its just the fob buttons don't activate the locks. Pressing them just set a buzzer off in the engine bay.

Quick update

I've taken the x trail for a 100 mile round trip and the key fob has started locking the doors again. I have read somewhere before, maybe on here, about a guy taking his T31 for a 250 mile drive and the key fob started doing something again.

It might be a complete coincidence and stop working again soon, but it's worked 1st time, both locking and unlocking, the past 3 times I've driven.

Will report back in a few days how I get on.

Hi guys,

After a few days trouble free the problem has reappeared.

I've noticed on the dash a big red "KEY" light that I'm sure used to be green when I turn the ignition barrel. Not the small key inside a car outline (although that light is still flashing). Am I imagining this or is this indicating something?

Took it for diagnostics yesterday and the only fault code was for a historic for an air bag module. Cleared that and the air bag light has gone out but still the locking problem.

Now locks are working again but the sat nav screen is black, displaying the word secure in a yellow box. Apparently the yellow box indicates something, it can be green or red, but I can't find any info online.

I'm waiting on a call back from the "senior technician" at a local Nissan dealer. I'll propbably take it to them for a diagnostics and see what they say.
