Whirring noise from engine

Hi all
Grateful for your assistance. I can hear a bit of an extra whirring type noise (not very loud above engine noise) from the engine when I drive the car ( Note, it is not a whistling noise, I have had a new turbo under warranty when the car was almost 3 years old ).
When I lift the bonnet and rev the engine I hear an air sucking type noise that dies back a second or so after the engine dies back to idle. That noise comes the right hand side of the engine ( as I face the front of the car). It seems to be coming from the largish black box there and the open ended rubber pipe that comes from it. I'm worried that I may have an expensive problem brewing or already. I have had the car from new and am pretty well tuned to new noises etc from the car. This is a recent thing.
Apologies for my lack of engine knowledge, but as always would would appreciate your help.
Cheers
Gary

Check the air filter, the bit in the big box where the noise is coming from, they just un-clip with four clips. I viewed one the other day that was making a funny rushing, sucking type noise from there and on investigation I found the air filter inside had partly colapsed, apparently it had just been serviced.....yeah right....the air filter looked years old

Have a look in there first

Hi Chris
Thank you very much for your suggestion. Just checked the air filter and it seems quite good. It has a dark stain right where the inlet is so I turned it around but I still get the same thing. I would hope that it would be ok, my local Nissan garage has serviced from new and they seem to be reliable.

Thinking about the noise now it is like a rapidly slowing down slightly rattly fan which I notice immediately the revs drop away but lasts about a second after.

Any further ideas?

Hi

No, no smoke (well, only a quick puff if I put my foot down during a long run and then only once per trip... I think that's normal for a diesel) and power seems same as always.

Odd, cant help much more really, keep an eye on it and if it gets worse or anything else odd happens start looking harder for the problem.
Its the same engine that I have in my Almera which I've owned for the past 5yrs and one reason I bought my X-Trail as I know the lump pretty well and understand a lot of its quirks, yeah they will give a puff when they are booted but thats normal.
My Almera turbo is quite worn and gives a "rushing" sound when spun up but my regular oil changes have kept further wear at bay for the time being.

Tks Chris, appreciate your help. It is coming up for it's annual oil change so maybe that will help. The dealership did mention a very small oil leak on the turbo last time (their advice was that no work necessary but keep under watch in future). Have been monitoring it and the car is not using any oil so must be very small and not getting worse.

As you say, will keep an eye on it.
Cheers

I wouldnt say I've done a lot, TBH I'm the worst offender for not really worrying about odd noises  but then I use vehicles I own as just a tool for going from A to B rather than any status symbol, as long as it gets there I'm not worried about any funny noises are going on.
